Mini Grammar Lesson: Thai Travel & Taxi Phrases

1. ไป (bpai) = “go / to go”
Thai often uses ไป before a place.
Pattern:
ไป + place
Examples:
- ไปบีทีเอสค่ะ
bpai bii-thii-ée khâ
“To the BTS please.” - ไปเอ็มอาร์ทีค่ะ
bpai em-aa-r-thii khâ
“To the MRT please.” - ไปตลาดครับ
bpai dtà-làat khráp
“To the market.”
2. ใช้ + noun = “use”
ใช้ means “to use.”
Pattern:
ใช้ + thing
Examples:
- ใช้มิเตอร์ด้วยนะคะ
chái mí-dtêr dûai ná khá
“Please use the meter.” - ใช้บัตรได้ไหมคะ
chái bàt dâi mái khá
“Can I use a card?” - ใช้โทรศัพท์ครับ
chái thoo-rá-sàp khráp
“(I’m) using the phone.”
3. ได้ไหม = “can?” / “is it possible?”
This is a very common polite question pattern.
Pattern:
verb + ได้ไหม
Examples:
- วินมอเตอร์ไซค์ได้ไหมคะ
win mɔɔ-dtêr-sai dâi mái khá
“Can I take a motorbike taxi?” - ขอลดหน่อยได้ไหมคะ
khǎw lót nòi dâi mái khá
“Can you lower it a bit?” - ไปเร็วหน่อยได้ไหมครับ
bpai reo nòi dâi mái khráp
“Can you go a little faster?”
4. หน่อย (nòi) softens requests
หน่อย makes requests sound gentler and more natural.
Compare:
- ลดราคา
“Lower the price.” - ลดราคาหน่อย
“Please lower the price a little.”
You will hear หน่อย constantly in everyday Thai.
