Mini Grammar: Asking Politely in a Thai Restaurant

In this lesson, you’ll see several useful Thai patterns for ordering food, asking for items, and responding politely in a restaurant. These patterns are short, natural, and very useful for real travel situations.
1. Using ขอ (khǎaw) to Ask for Something
ขอ (khǎaw) means “to ask for” or “may I have.” It is one of the most useful words for politely requesting something in Thai.
Pattern:
ขอ + item + หน่อย + ค่ะ/ครับ
khǎaw + item + nòi + khà/khráp
May I have + item, please?
ขอเมนูหน่อยค่ะ
khǎaw meenuu nòi khà
Can I have the menu?
ขอน้ำแข็งหน่อยค่ะ
khǎaw náam khaěng nòi khà
May I have some ice?
The word หน่อย (nòi) helps soften the request. It makes the sentence sound more polite and natural.
2. Using ขอ with an Action
You can also use ขอ (khǎaw) before an action, not just before an object.
ขอสั่งอาหารเลยครับ
khǎaw sàng aahǎan loei khráp
I’d like to order now.
Here, สั่งอาหาร (sàng aahǎan) means “to order food.” The word เลย (loei) adds the feeling of “now,” “right away,” or “go ahead and.”
3. Asking “Would You Like…?” with รับ + ไหม
Restaurant staff often use รับ (ráp) when offering something to a customer.
Pattern:
รับ + item + ไหม + ครับ/คะ
ráp + item + mái + khráp/khá
Would you like + item?
รับน้ำไหมครับ
ráp náam mái khráp
Would you like water?
รับกระดาษทิชชู่ไหมครับ
ráp kràdàat thíchchûu mái khráp
Would you like a napkin?
4. Asking for More with เพิ่ม (phôem)
เพิ่ม (phôem) means “more,” “extra,” or “additional.” You can use it when asking for another item or more of something.
Pattern:
ขอ + item + เพิ่ม + ได้ไหม + คะ/ครับ
khǎaw + item + phôem + dâai mái + khá/khráp
Can I have another/more + item?
ขอส้อมเพิ่มได้ไหมคะ
khǎaw sôm phôem dâai mái khá
Can I have another fork?
The phrase ได้ไหม (dâai mái) means “can?” or “is it possible?” It is a very useful phrase for making polite requests.
5. Asking for a Recommendation
To ask what someone recommends, you can use แนะนำอะไรดี (náenam àrai dii).
แนะนำ (náenam) means “to recommend.”
อะไรดี (àrai dii) means something like “what would be good?”
แนะนำอะไรดีคะ
náenam àrai dii khá
What do you recommend?
Quick Takeaway
The most useful patterns from this lesson are:
- ขอ + item + หน่อย — May I have something?
- รับ + item + ไหม — Would you like something?
- ขอ + item + เพิ่ม + ได้ไหม — Can I have more or another one?
- แนะนำอะไรดี — What do you recommend?
These patterns will help you sound polite and natural when ordering food, asking for things, or talking with restaurant staff in Thai.
