Lesson 4: Ordering Food & Drinks

Phonetic Keys:

  • Tones: mid (no mark), à = low, á = high, â = falling, ǎ = rising
  • Vowels: long vowels are doubled (aa, ii, uu, ʉʉ, əə, etc.).
  • Consonants: kh, th, ph = aspirated; k, t, p = unaspirated (often sound like g, d, b).
  • Special vowels: ʉ (/ɯ/), ə (/ə/).

3) Grammar Notes

  1. เอา (ao) + [noun] = I want / I’ll take (used when ordering).
    Ex: เอาน้ำ (ao náam) = I’ll take water.
  2. อยาก + verb = want to do something.
    Ex: อยากกิน (yàak gin) = want to eat.
  3. Adjectives come after the noun.
    Ex: อาหารอร่อย (aa-hǎan a-ròi) = food delicious → the food is delicious.
